Waitrose to open Leamington store creating 180 jobs

"SUPERMARKET chain Waitrose has announced plans to open a £20 million store in Leamington – creating up to 180 jobs"

Plans for the 25,000 sq ft food shop in Leamington will be unveiled at a public exhibition next weekend.

The supermarket chain, which has a store in Kenilworth, is in talks with Coventry-based Deeley Properties to create the shop on the site of the town’s fire station.

Warwickshire County Council is in the early stages of considering redevelopment plans for the existing Warwick Street fire station – which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.

The fire service is in the process of relocating to a new site.

In response to the county council’s request for interested parties to submit ideas for the site, Deeley and Waitrose have now drawn up a proposal and will be inviting the community to view their plans.

Subject to the feedback, Waitrose is hoping to submit a planning application to the council next month.

Peter Deeley, of Deeley Properties, said: “We believe this would be very good news for Leamington. It is, in our opinion, the perfect store for the town in the perfect location.

“It is just a short walk from the very heart of the town and is very much a town centre location.

"The fact it is the central core of the town, means it will attract a high number of shoppers on foot who live or work locally, making it more sustainable than shops on the fringes of Leamington – a very important issue when considering the long term vitality of the town’s shopping offer.

“The Kenilworth store opened in 2008 and since then footfall in the town centre has risen by more than 20 per cent.

"We think it will provide a strong draw for potential shoppers to Leamington, which will benefit the local economy and the whole process is a great example of the private and public sectors working together for the greater good.”

Nigel Keen, director of development for Waitrose, added: “We have wanted to open in Leamington for a very long time so when the council invited interested parties to share their ideas, we welcomed the opportunity to bring forward a proposal.

“Listening to the views of the local community is paramount in our approach and we wanted to start speaking to shopkeepers and residents as soon as we could.

“We now look forward to developing plans for a quality new food store which we believe will be appropriate in scale for the town whilst still creating a significant number of new jobs.”

The plans will be unveiled at the Royal Priors Shopping Centre on Friday from 10am until 4pm and next Saturday, from 10am until 2pm.
