Twice as many shoppers now buying locally produced food

"The Real Food Festival happens every week at London’s Borough Market. It has been conceived as a mini version of the Annual Real Food Festival."

Philip Lowery, Director of the Real Food Festival comments on recent research showing value shopping doesn’t have to mean abandoning your values.

“The Real Food Festival has been working to promote an alternative to the existing supermarket-led food system by highlighting the importance of buying sustainable and ethically produced food and drink direct from small producers. What’s interesting is that this latest research from IGD suggests that British shoppers are increasingly looking to do the same. Their survey this month shows 30% of shoppers buying locally produced food over the last month, twice the figure recorded three years ago.”

“It is a sign of changing consumer attitudes, the need to support local producers with shoppers searching for value without compromising their values. 54% of shoppers said they bought local food either to support local producers and farmers, 34% bought local to support local retailers and 29% to keep jobs in the local community – this further demonstrates the need for more promotion to highlight clearly the positive benefits of buying seasonal and regional food, at a time when consumers want to buy into this as much as possible.
