Takeover saves 70 jobs axed at food firm, with more to follow
by newsguardian.co.uk - 03/11/2010
"A NORTH TYNESIDE company hopes to save almost 100 jobs lost after a food factory went into administration last year."
Longbenton Foods is set to restore the jobs after buying assets, land and buildings previously owned by Northumberland Foods in Amble.
The firm, based at the old Findus site in Benton Lane, already employs 100 staff of its own and has now almost doubled that by giving 70 Northumberland Foods employees their old jobs back at Amble, with a further 30 positions expected to follow.
Longbenton Foods managing director Vidar Engen, pictured, said: “We are pleased to confirm the purchase and that 70 former Northumberland Foods employees have already been re-appointed.
“There are plans to create further employment opportunities as the business grows.
“Agreements have been made with local producers to supply potatoes, and it is our aim for production lines to be up and running in time for Christmas to supply favourite products such as goose fat-roast potatoes and honey-roast parsnips.”
Production got back under way at Amble last Thursday, with the revived plant’s first deliveries being despatched the day after.”
The Longbenton firm was advised on its purchase of Northumberland Foods, formerly known as Cheviot Foods, by regional development agency One North East.
All 250 workers employed by Northumberland Foods lost their jobs in August, a year and a half after all 420 staff at the old Findus factory were laid off after a fire.
Last week’s buyout means more than a quarter of those job losses have now been reversed, and hopes are high that further recruitment drives will follow.
Vidar said: “We have worked closely with our partners One North East and Northumberland County Council in order to return this site to production and bring jobs back to Amble.
“None of this could have been achieved without their dedicated support.”
One North East business finance manager Ken Samson added: “It is pleasing to see Longbenton Foods continuing to develop and expand in the region, offering employment opportunities.
“Longbenton Foods is an exciting new success story in a sector that is important to the regional and UK economy.”
