Supermarket industry has 25,857 jobs up for grabs right no

Supermarket industry has 25,857 jobs up for grabs right no

"The multi-million pound supermarket industry is constantly hiring staff and today there are at least 25,857 jobs up for grabs"

This includes 1,665 new jobs with Morrisons as six new branches open nationwide, plus thousands of other jobs with apprenticeships and training programmes for school leavers and graduates at most chains.

“They offer fantastic career opportunities for keen, talented individuals,” says Anne Seaman of Skillsmart Retail.

“When hiring new staff, supermarkets look at a candidate’s attitude, willingness to work hard and commercial awareness as much as their qualifications – meaning you can get your foot in the door and on to the career ladder.”

Training, whether you’re working part-time or looking to climb the ladder, is fantastic. “They are very keen to train and develop their staff. It’s an extremely competitive marketplace and supermarkets know, more than ever, that price alone isn’t enough: great customer service and knowledge of the products on sale are essential.

“Nearly all the major supermarkets now offer retail apprenticeships and other qualifications, giving plenty of chances to get your skills nationally recognised at work.” The chances of promotion are phenomenal if that’s what you want. “Don’t forget, some of the UK’s leading retailers started their careers on the shop floor and worked their way up to the top. There aren’t a lot of other sectors that can genuinely say that.”

WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

Many supermarket jobs, particularly with Tesco, are advertised at local Jobcentre Plus branches, which currently list 23,052 available jobs ranging from sales assistants to cashiers. See www.direct.gov.uk/jobseekers.

Also check with local stores direct to see if they are currently recruiting and keep an eye out for new stores opening in your area – they recruit weeks in advance .

Morrisons is currently recruiting 1,665 people for new stores in Salford, Wrexham, Wisbech, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Glasgow and Portsmouth, plus 100 staff at the newly refurbished store in Hadleigh, Suffolk. Check your Jobcentre Plus for open days.

Tesco has also announced it will be taking on 440 graduates to its 17 schemes.

Asda has around 700 jobs available – ranging from shop floor to technical roles such as opticians and pharmacists.

They’ve also committed to making 6,000 apprentice opportunities available to employees by the end of this year – and up to 25,000 by the end of 2012. Check outwww.asda.com/jobs.

Sainsbury’s has 50 opportunities available on its trainee manager scheme for people with two A-levels and a passion for retail and customer service with a starting salary of £17,500. Applications open on Friday, August 12 (closing August 26). Visit www.sainsburystm.co.uk.

The Co-operative Group has launched its apprenticeship academy promising 2,000 jobs over the next three years.

The £9million academy will offer young people transferable skills and competitive salaries as well as help them gain qualifications.

Apprentices will be based within one of the businesses, which range from food, pharmacy and motors to legal and financial services and farming, and funerals.
