Seafod industry welcomes new frozen food survey

"A HIGHLY detailed new report on the future of the UK frozen food and frozen fish industry has been welcomed by some of the country's leading seafood companies."

Findus Group, the parent of Young's, strongly endorsed the new "Food Vision" report which made a powerful case for frozen food because it met consumer demands for high quality, nutritional benefits without costing the environment.

Leendert den Hollander, managing director of Findus UK & Ireland, said: "This report confirms our conviction that frozen is at the very core of modern food because it can deliver what consumers want and what society needs. Freezing is nature’s way of preserving food and offers nutritional value without the need for artificial additives or preservation techniques - it delivers in every way on quality, safety, value and the environment.

"Given all its natural positives, we believe it’s inevitable that frozen food will soon play a central role in delivering healthier diets. It's a simple and environmentally efficient way to help secure year-round food supplies for a growing population and therefore also makes an important contribution to our wider food security."

Commissioned by the British Frozen Food Federation and conducted by Sheffield Hallam University, the report concludes that "frozen fish offers a high quality, good value food, with a first-rate safety record; a nutritional profile comparable to ‘fresh’, in a format that would help to control portion sizes; and environmental benefits - including the ability to reduce food waste and preserve seasonal products for all-year-round use".

Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell has written the forward and said that as an MP for a fishing town, frozen food was dear to his heart.

"It is clear from the evidence presented that frozen food has a key role to play in our future food choice. Frozen can deliver high quality, good value, safe foods with an extended storage life," he added. "It can also offer a nutritional profile comparable to fresh foods and help to provide dietary portion control."
