Scottish food and drink: a growth industry

"Scotland's food and drink producers have been given a chance to showcase their wares on the world stage."

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead attended the globally-renowned Anuga Food Fair in Cologne, along with key members of the industry, to explore new markets and boost the profile of Scottish food and drink abroad.

"It's fitting that at the end of Scotland's Year of Homecoming we are now going forward to the international market to showcase Scotland's reputation as a land of food and drink,” Mr. Lochhead said.

He added that being in the spotlight should encourage producers to apply for protected food name status (PFN), which gives Scottish products, such as Scotch Beef and lamb, Scottish Farmed Salmon and Arbroath Smokies, protection from inferior imitations.

By joining the scheme, producers could increase their sales internationally and create more JOBSEEKER HOME LINK in Scotland within the farming, fishing, retail and production industries.

Companies exhibiting at Anuga included AG Barr, Highland Smoked Salmon, Kingdom Dairies and Quality Meat Scotland (QMS).

Laurent Vernet, Head of Marketing for QMS said local meat producers were committed to competing “at the top end of the world stage”.

“There is certainly potential for Scotland to further develop its export trade for red meat products - exports are a healthy complement to the important domestic market for the Scottish red meat business,” he added.

David Smith, operations director at Scotland Development International, said events like Anuga were a great opportunity for Scottish companies to expand their business.

"During tough economic times, attending exhibitions like Anuga and having the opportunity to present new products to international buyers becomes even more important, so we are delighted to be supporting the industry like this,” he said.
