Romer Labs moves to the Heath in Runcorn

Romer Labs moves to the Heath in Runcorn

"A FOOD diagnostics company has moved to the Heath, Runcorn, to develop test kits for products aimed at allergic consumers."

Romer Labs UK wants to supply the devices to food manufacturers targeting the growing number of allergy sufferers.

The firm has outgrown its former site in Abergele, Wales.

Its instruments detect traces of peanut, gluten, hazelnut, almond, casein and egg and a company spokesman said test kits for walnut, cashew, pistachio, macadamia, brazil nut, sesame, lupin and mustard will be available soon.

The firm said demand for allergen- free foods is rocketing because the number of allergy sufferers has tripled in the last 20 years.

The spokesman said one in 20 children has a food allergy and one in 50 is allergic to nuts.

Richard Fielder, Romer Labs UK sales director, said the company also offers support to suppliers during contaminated food scandals.

He said: “Food safety is continually in the news.

“Allergies, labelling and recalls receive huge media coverage and keep us very busy.

“We specialise in providing test kits and services for detecting and controlling food allergens in order to support labelling claims.

“So when the label states the product is nut-free, gluten-free or dairy-free, we can help the food company ensure that the statement is accurate to ensure their brand is protected.

“If the brand is compromised because of contamination or labelling, the product and the company could lose public confidence, and the consumers’ health could be put at risk.”
