Northumberland company battles back from liquidation

Northumberland company battles back from liquidation

"A NORTH East chilli sauce company is firing on all fronts just months after battling back from liquidation"

Northumberland-based TCD Foods Ltd, which supplies its own brand of the spicy condiments to stores across the country, has received a grant of more than £35,000.

The company, formerly known as Tree’s Can’t Dance, now hopes to expand its Haltwhistle business and create new jobs after receiving the money from the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE).

The cash has further stabilised the operation, which went into liquidation at the turn of the year amid circumstances the owners did not discuss. Experienced food factory boss John Pike, of Hexham, stepped in and TDC Food Ltd has flourished ever since.

The funding from RDPE, which draws on a pool of European Union cash managed by One North East, will help create six full-time jobs and help ensure all of the company’s products are produced on site.

The expansion will also provide a service for the North East’s rural economy allowing fellow rural businesses to diversify into food production by using TCD’s facilities.

TCD’s products were originally inspired by traditional recipes and came from director Dan May’s frustration at not being able to recreate the authentic flavours of international cuisine which he experienced as a professional travel photographer. Mr May said: “As a result of changing eating habits the chilli sector of the food industry is currently undergoing rapid growth, and while it is currently dominated by three brands we know that our product has a unique offering which can’t be matched by any other competitors so we feel it is important to expand what we do to continue to grow our product.

“As a result of this we are taking on extra staff and are keen to help the North East food and drink supply chain by continuing to use homegrown goods wherever possible and open up our new facilities for other rural businesses to diversify into food production.”

Adrian Sherwood, RDPE Manager at One North East, said: “The funding will allow the company to develop its brand even further in order to compete with national retailers making TCD a more sustainable business.”
