Nom UK to create 350 jobs with £110m plan
by insidermedia.com - 21/10/2011
"Dairy company Nom UK has revealed plans to invest up to £110m in its Shropshire operations over the coming years."
The company will create up to 350 new jobs in the process, Insider has been told.
Nom UK supplies private label and branded short-life dairy products to more than 90 per cent of the supermarket retailers in the UK and Ireland.
The £70m-turnover company said its target with the mulitimillion-pound investment programme is to become the market leader in the live dairy industry.
Through its initial expansion plan, additional production lines will be introduced at the Nom Dairy plant in Telford, doubling the operation which currently employs 160 people.
Growth plans will be produced in two stages, a spokesman told Insider. Up to 200 jobs will be created in the first, with £65m ploughed into the business, followed by an additional 150 positions to be recruited for. A total of between £100m and £110m will be invested through the venture.
The drive is being overseen by Christoph Wenisch, chief executive of Nöm International.
He said: "Nom UK is uniquely placed to build its market share substantially through the opportunities presented by developing our UK manufacturing centre which uses British milk and local labour as well as sustainable production methods and offers significant carbon footprint reduction.
"There is extensive land on our 24-acre site available for the expansion and most of the base infrastructure is already in place to process the large additional volumes of British milk that will be required."
Doubling the size of the dairy would enable Nom UK to ramp up production from 350 million pots a year to around one billion pots, he said.
He added that while Nom UK was growing organically it was also actively looking to establish a co-operation arrangement with one or more partners.
"We are already engaged in discussions with three potential partners. At this stage we are open to what form that co-operation would take. The important thing is that it is beneficial to all parties involved and helps us develop our site more quickly," said Wenisch.
The company's main owner is Austrian-based Raiffeisen Banking Group.
As the company's plans to expand were unveiled, current chief executive of Nom Dairy UK, David Potts, announced he would be leaving the business at the end of the year to follow other opportunities.
Wenisch said: "We are very grateful for everything that David has done at Nom over the past few years. He has built a successful business with a strong customer base and we wish him well."
