New food colleges to train Sainsbury’s staff

New food colleges to train Sainsbury’s staff

"The UK’s third biggest grocer Sainsbury’s is to provide new training facilities for its employees who work on the meat, fish, deli and hot food counters."

Café staff will also be able to benefit from the six new food colleges set to open in the months ahead.

Sainsbury’s has also announced that it will be creating 500 new counter and café jobs over the next 12 months to coincide with the retailer’s store expansion plans.

The company revealed earlier this year that it aims to increase its floor space by 15 per cent by March 2011, and it recently opened its largest stores in England, Scotland and Wales to help move towards this target.

Gwyn Burr, Sainsbury’s Customer Service and Colleague Director, said: “We believe that the skills that our colleagues will learn and develop at the colleges will play a big part in our future success.”

He added: “I am thrilled to be able to announce the creation of these new jobs on our counters and cafés, particularly in the current economic climate.

“We are proud that Sainsbury’s is known as a great place to work and I am sure that our new colleagues will enjoy the fast paced and exciting world of retail.”

Sainsbury’s six colleges are located at Murrayfield, Bradford, Oldbury, London Colney, Calcot and Hempstead Valley.
