New food board for the North East

"LEADING lights in the North East food sector have come together in a new strategic board."

The North East England Food and Drink Group aims to strengthen the industry, create jobs and attract more tourists to the area.

Its new board will be led by Government farming and food advisor Sir Donald Curry and involve a number of the region's leading figures in the industry.

They include Blagdon Farm Shop Manager Joanne Celerier, chef Terry Laybourne, North East Tourism Advisory Board Chairman Geoff Hodgson and Northumbria Larder Chairman Henry Roberts.

Priorities include raising awareness of local produce, encouraging producers to supply new markets, promoting the sector as a career choice and making it more competitive.

Sir Donald said: "The reputation and wide-ranging experience of the board's new members will ensure that North East food and drink is given the maximum opportunity to fulfil its potential on a local, national and international level."
