Monaghan gets employment boost as mushroom factory announces 150 jobs

"Monaghan Mushrooms will create 150 new jobs, thanks to the opening of a new state-of-the-art plant.
"

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith will officially unveil the new EUR12 million mushroom growing facility, located at Tyholland, Co Monaghan, today (August 16th).

Monaghan Mushroom, which already employs 2,297 people across Ireland, the UK and Canada, holds 17 per cent of the market share in Ireland and 45 per cent in the UK.

Minister Smith said the firm is playing a leading role in the development of the industry.

"The mushroom industry is worth in excess of EUR100 million per year and over 70 per cent of that production is exported," said Mr Smith.

"This business has always been a market-led industry with a straightforward objective - that is, to keep fresh mushrooms on the supermarket shelves, when, how and where the customer wants."

The company was founded by Ronnie Wilson, who said the new development would have a very positive impact on the town because it would boost employment.

Last year, the company purchased a mushroom production and distribution facility in Canada.
