McDonald's to make calorie count visible to customers at the counter
by Alex Pielak - 17/03/2011
"Customers will soon be able to see just how many calories their Big Mac and fries contain as McDonald's agrees to show calorie counts on menu boards."
The fast-food giant has bowed to public pressure and will display the calorific content of its food on the menu boards at counters from September.
A cheese quarter-pounder has 490 calories, while a McChicken sandwich has 385 calories.
McDonald’s said the move followed internal research which found that eight in ten customers believed all companies should display ‘simple, visible, calorie information’.
Fewer than one in five of the 2,000 people interviewed said calorie counts on menu boards would make them think more about what they are eating.
McDonald’s tested calorie labelling in 125 restaurants and will be rolling them out across the 1,200 outlets.
The company's UK and North Europe chief executive, Jill McDonald, said the decision 'supports the principles we've always believed are important: giving our customers clear information to make informed choices.'
