Marks & Spencer poaches convenience head from Morrisons
by supermarket.co.za - 13/04/2011
"Marks & Spencer’s Chief Executive Marc Bolland has poached one of his former Morrisons colleagues, Christopher Taylor, to take charge of his food stores division."
Taylor, who was leading Morrisons’ expansion into smaller convenience stores, is the first of Bolland’s former executives to be hired by M&S since he himself was poached as Chief Executive in May 2010.
Taylor, a food retail veteran of over 35 years, will take charge of running M&S’ 360 Simply Food stores and 335 restaurants and cafes located within stores countrywide. He takes up the new role, titled Director of Simply Food, franchise and hospitality, on 3 May and will report to Steve Rowe, M&S’ Director of Retail. His appointment follows an internal reshuffle at M&S that will see Neil Hyslop, who currently holds the position, move to a new role as Director of Space Planning and development. He will be responsible for overhauling M&S’ current sites and developing new shops.
Taylor’s decision to defect will be viewed as a blow to Morrisons, which plans to open its first smaller stores, branded ‘M Local’, this year as it works to expand into new areas and grow its market share. The grocer said his departure would not affect its plans and it would open its first convenience store in Ilkley, northern England, in July - a month ahead of plan. A spokesman said Taylor had already been replaced by Miles Foster and Keith Wright, who will head up convenience stores and merchandising and buying for the stores respectively. After the pilot, Gordon Mowat, the newly appointed Strategy Director, will be responsible for convenience.
The M&S appointment is the latest in a string of high-profile hirings by Bolland as he looks to implement a plan announced in November to revamp stores and to expand online and overseas. In February, he poached Laura Wade-Gery from Tesco to head up M&S's online business, and later that month he recruited Jan Heere from Spanish fashion group Inditex to lead its overseas expansion drive.
