Lasagne sandwich launched by Tesco
by Martin Frecker - 15/07/2010
"If you're Italian, we suggest you look away now. Tesco has created the ultimate student sandwich... designed to taste like leftover cold lasagne."
The supermarket believes its very British twist on an Italian classic will prove to be "the food of choice for anyone wanting a solid snack between meals".
The lasagne sandwich, which went on sale yesterday, was thought up by Laura Fagan, the store's food developer and sandwich creator. She said: "The inspiration is my own student days and how certain foods taste better the next day, such as pizza, lasagne... and curry!
"Lasagne sandwiches were a favourite of mine back in student days and were really popular with all my mates at university. It was the type of food that could be made quickly from leftovers but could really keep you going between meals or prove to be the perfect breakfast food after a long night."

The £2 sandwich is made up of two thick slices of bread with a filling of diced beef in a tangy tomato and herb sauce, layered with cooked pasta sheets and finished with a creamy cheddar, ricotta and mayonnaise dressing. A Tesco spokesman added: "It must rank as the ultimate on-the-go snack and one of the most offbeat commercially-made sandwiches ever."
It is not the first time Tesco has made headlines with an unusual sliced snack.
Last month the supermarket chain launched a "singing sandwich" for the World Cup, which played the "Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole" football chant when the packaging was opened.
In 2006 it introduced what it claimed was the UK's first commercially-made sweet sandwich - a rich banana and chocolate creation.
