Krispy Kreme to open first UK doughnut factory in Greater Manchester

Krispy Kreme to open first UK doughnut factory in Greater Manchester

"The factory, which will create up to 40 jobs, will supply 15 varieties of doughnuts to Krispy Kreme's outlets around the north west, which include cabinets in Tesco and Selfridges stores."

Doughnut firm Krispy Kreme is to open its first UK factory in Greater Manchester,

It has taken a 10-year lease on a unit at Heywood Distribution Park, with the capacity to produce up to 3,000 doughnuts every hour.

The factory, which will create up to 40 jobs, will supply 15 varieties of doughnuts to Krispy Kreme's outlets around the north west, which include cabinets in Tesco and Selfridges stores.

It is scheduled to open in mid-March.

Krispy Kreme, which was founded in the US in 1937 and began operations in the UK in 2003, says the new site will enable it to expand its presence in the region.

The company is planning to open sales points within stores and is seeking four sites to launch standalone Krispy Kreme outlets in the region.

Rob Hunt, chief financial officer at Krispy Kreme UK, said: "Our doughnuts are baked overnight and then distributed fresh to our sites every morning.

"The factory in Heywood will allow us to supply many more distribution points across the north west.

"This move is the next step for our expansion plans to double the number of UK stores in the next five years.

"We looked at a number of industrial parks across the north west but Heywood proved to be the perfect location for us, not only because of its fantastic transport links but because it is brand new and therefore highly suitable for food grade use."

Surrey-based Krispy Kreme currently has 42 UK stores, including ones at Barton Dock Road at Trafford Park and in Manchester's Piccadilly, and supplies 180 Tesco supermarkets.
