Jobs ‘safe’ in Greencore and Northern Foods merger deal
by Julie Hayes - 24/11/2010
"HUNDREDS of jobs in Selby are not expected to be affected by the proposed merger of food companies Greencore and Northern Foods, announced yesterday."
Irish foods business Greencore employs more than 600 people on its 23-acre site on Barlby Road, Selby, which produces Heinz pickles, Weight Watchers Salad dressings as well its own brand cooking sauces, dips and condiments.
A spokesman for Greencore said the company had announced its intention to merge, and was pending approval from the Office of Fair Trading and its shareholders before it is finalised, which is expected to be in March next year.
However, he said there was no overlap between Greencore’s Selby operations and anything that Northern Foods does so there was “no intention to change the structures or make any significant changes” to the Selby plant.
The merger of the two businesses, if approved, will create a new business called Essenta Foods, which will be registered and have a corporate head office in Dublin and a UK operational centre in Yorkshire.
The businesses said in the proposal submitted to the stock exchange that the merger is expected to save about £40 million per year, including about £15 million from overhead costs, £20 million from purchasing and supply chain improvements and £5 million from financing and tax efficiencies.
Anthony Hobson, chairman of Northern Foods, who will become chairman of Essenta Foods, said: “The proposed merger is a great opportunity to develop fully the potential of both companies.
“It will create a sustainable, top tier organisation which will be capable of delivering best in class food products and innovative solutions to its customers.”
Patrick Coveney, CEO of Greencore, who will become CEO of Essenta Foods, added that the business would create a substantial chilled prepared food company in fast growing categories in the UK.
“The time is right for both companies to build a real ‘better than both’ business and I look forward to bringing together the teams from Greencore and Northern Foods to deliver on this opportunity,” he said.
