Jobs boost for Lakes catering firm
by - 05/10/2010
"A SOUTH Lakes catering firm is expanding its business and creating new jobs."
Bridge Catering, currently based at Newby Bridge, is moving to Crakeside Business Park, Greenodd.
Bosses expect the move to create four full-time jobs and some part-time roles.
Owner Mike Hales established The Bridge Cafe at Newby Bridge in 2004.
Over the years the business has evolved to become a catering empire, including sandwich and express food service, Bridge Express, the Bridge Deli and Lifestyle Emporium and Bridge Catering.
Mr Hale said: “We have been looking for about 18 months to find the right premises.
“After the floods last year, we re-branded our company into the three divisions and have put them all together in the new premises.”
The company has been given a grant of £11,000 by Furness Enterprise for staff and marketing, to help with the estimated £80,000 costs of expanding the business.
Mr Hales said: “We have had the first job created up there already and there will be another two or three jobs by Christmas.
“It’s a substantial investment and it should reap rewards.”
Furness Enterprise funding and new start manager, Val Robinson, welcomed the firm’s expansion.
She said: “Not only is it a local business expanding locally, but they are creating local jobs which is difficult in these times.
“They are bringing in clients from across the country. It’s brilliant.”
While the new Greenodd unit will provide the hub for the outside catering services, the original Bridge Café and Bistro at Newby Bridge will remain open, serving food made with local produce.
Mr Hales said: “We want to keep the company’s focus on using local produce and selling local products.
“We are able to help other businesses in the area tremendously, including other grant recipients.
“We can sell their products in our deli shop so they don’t have to worry about their shops.
“We are thinking about the bigger picture.
“The premises are large enough to not only house the kitchen space but also provide the opportunity to develop the Deli and Lifestyle Emporium.
“Customers will be able to see the catering team in action from a glass viewing area.
“It will give people the perfect vantage point to see how our food is created and prepared.
“The open kitchen idea was popular in the Bistro and we are keen for customers to see the kitchen in action.
“It’s quite exciting really.”
