Isleport Foods expansion could create nearly 100 jobs
by thisisthewestcountry.co.uk - 26/04/2011
"Nearly 100 jobs could be created after one of the Burnham and Highbridge area's biggest firms announced plans for a major expansion. "
Plans have been lodged with Sedgemoor District Council to expand the Isleport Foods factory, based on the Isleport Business Park.
Bakkavor, the Icelandic fresh food manufacturer which owns the site, says output has outgrown capacity and has applied to build two huge new extensions, which could create 92 jobs.
The plans, which won the backing of Burnham and Highbridge Town Council's planning committee this week, could see the number of staff at the factory increase from 306 to 398.
Town councillor Joe Leach said: “We always encourage the creation of new jobs in the town and Isleport Foods is a big contributor to local employment and it is great to see its expansion plans.”
Burnham and Highbridge MP Tessa Munt also welcomed the news, while Mike Murphy, chairman of Highbridge Chamber of Trade, added: “We are all thrilled by the prospect of new jobs and that companies are investing in the supply and development of food provision.
“Often we think of Highbridge as the high street with shops closing, but I congratulate this company on being forward thinking.”
A spokesman for Bakkavor said the proposed expansion at Isleport Foods was in the “early stages” and would not comment on what type of jobs could be created.
Sedgemoor District Council will determine the planning application.
