Hungry for graduate career success? Try the thriving food and drink industry
by TARGETjobs news editor - 15/03/2011
"UK food and drink exports passed the £10 billion mark for the first time last year, food and farming minister Jim Paice announced yesterday. "
Demand has been growing strongly, particularly in non-EU markets, making this a good time for graduates to consider seeking careers in the sector.
If you’re thinking about applying for graduate schemes in fast moving consumer goods companies, having some idea of the growth potential in emerging markets will help you to demonstrate your commercial awareness to employers. Overall, UK food and drink exports were up by 11.4% on 2009. Some of the growth figures for emerging markets were spectacular, with China recording a 28.5% increase – incorporating a 1633% increase in dairy. In South Africa, demand for sweet biscuits was particularly strong – up 70.1%.
Mr Paice announced the export figures, which represent the sixth consecutive year of growth, at the International Food Expo held at ExCel London. He said, ‘This is excellent news, showing Britain that our food and drink industries are real areas of strength at the same time as showing the world how good our food is. People now recognise that Britain produces some of the best food you can get anywhere. The export sector is incredibly important to our producers, so the fact that we now export more than £10 billion worth of food and drink shows that discerning consumers across the globe value what we produce and that this vital sector is playing its part in Britain’s recovery.’
Graduate employment in the food and drink sector
The food and drink sector is the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, accounting for 15% of the sector as a whole. According to the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), the sector employs 440,000 people directly in the UK, plus as many as 1.2 million in related food services.
The FDF has been running a campaign, ‘Taste Success – a Future in Food’, to attract new recruits to careers in the industry. The campaign has sought to highlight the current shortage of qualified food scientists and technologists and the growing graduate opportunities the sector. It is estimated that by 2017 the sector will need 137,000 new recruits, and a third of the new jobs will be in managerial roles and professional occupations, suitable for graduates.
