Grant for food firm
by Gordon Bannerman - 16/02/2011
"A PERTHSHIRE butchery and food production firm has cashed-in on bacon’s popularity."
Dunning-based Simon Howie Butchers has received a near £180,000 grant from the Scottish Government’s Food Processing, Marketing and Co-operation scheme.
The company is one of 22 Scottish food and drink businesses sharing a £3 million pay-out.
Boss Simon Howie said: “We are using the grant for a new automated bacon slicing line which will satisfy the demand which has arisen for our dry-cured bacon products.
“We are selling this in the ‘big four’ – Tesco, Asda, Morrison’s and Sainsbury. Customers have constantly complained that modern day bacon is ‘full of white stuff’ and that they could not get ‘proper bacon’ and we have tried to address this.
“The products are in over 900 stores throughout the UK. The bacon business UK-wide is a category worth £900 million so we see huge potential in the top end, quality sector of this exciting category.”
As a result of grant assistance 15 new direct jobs in the Dunning factory have been created.
