Fox’s biscuit factory escapes closure
by Anthony Clay - 21/07/2011
"Worries that the Fox’s Biscuits factory in Batley was to close have been laid to rest by the company’s owner."
Northern Foods says that a £26.5m investment over the last 18 months means that all three of its factories across the country, including the one at Batley, will remain open.
There had been plans to build a £40m super factory and close one plant.
That was ditched in favour of investment in new equipment.
Now the investment plan – known as Project Golden – has led to cost reductions and productivity improvements.
But there have been job losses – approximately 200 in Batley and around 100 at the Uttoxeter factory – although 80 jobs have been created at Kirkham near Preston.
Northern Foods itself was the subject of a takeover battle earlier this year which was eventually won by Ranjit Boparan’s 2 Sisters Food Group which bought the business for £342m.
Graham Hunter, managing director of Fox’s Biscuits, said: “Much has changed during the 18-month phase of Project Golden.
“The unprecedented investment made in all three of our sites has been successful and has helped Fox’s to grow and become even stronger in the UK biscuits market.
“With the acquisition of Northern Foods by 2 Sisters Food Group, Fox’s has a new owner who believes in our business and who is excited about future growth prospects.
“With the integration process with 2 Sisters Food Group already started, with real progress in productivity and cost reduction and with further cost improvements planned, we have confirmed to our employees that none of the three Fox’s manufacturing sites will close as a result of this project.
“We recognise that this has been a period of uncertainty and we want to thank all our employees for their commitment, hard work and real performance improvement for the Fox’s cause.”
A spokesman for the 150-year-old Fox’s Biscuits company told the YEP: “We are trying to make Fox’s sustainable for the next 150 years.
