Food 'has become attractive to investors'

"Food hygiene professionals have seen the commodity become more popular with investors in recent months."

David Nabarro, UN special representative of the secretary-general for food security and nutrition, told listeners to the BMJ 'Food for thought' podcast that in general over the last 20 years, food prices around the world have remained quite low, but this has recently changed with spikes in certain commodities making investors more interested in the area.

He commented: "We find that in general food prices go at roughly the same rate in terms of rising and falling as oil prices do, especially when oil is above about $60 or $70 per barrel."

Mr Nabarro added that in today's world there is a tight balance between supply and demand for food.

According to Tam Fry, a spokesman for the National Obesity Forum, the rising impact of inflation and ongoing austerity measures in the UK could do a lot to force obese individuals to face their illness and get on the path to a healthier future.
