‘Food and drink industry jobs offer’

by The Northern Echo - 27/08/2009

‘Food and drink industry jobs offer’

"UP to 4,000 extra workers will be needed in the North-East’s food and drink industry during the next eight years, an industry body claimed."

Improve, the food and drink sector skills council, has encouraged young people worried about finding a job or a place at university or college this autumn to look at the industry.

Improve chief executive Jack Matthews said: “One industry that does have plenty of opportunities open is food and drink.

“The sector needs to replace its ageing workforce and many employers are crying out for talented, ambitious recruits, whether they have been to university or not.

“A quick glance at the courses available on the UCAS clearing website shows that more than 100 degree courses related to food and drink are still available, ranging from food science and technology to food industry and management.”

A recent study by Improve predicts that by 2017, the UK’s food and drink industry will need to recruit 72,000 workers to fill technical management, professional and skilled roles, including food scientists and technologists.

Mr Matthews said: “The food and drink industry has shown it is resilient to the recession – people always need to eat.”
