FDF Calls For Chancellor To Support Food Manufacturing Sector
by Namnews - 08/12/2009
"The Food and Drink Federation is urging the Chancellor to use next week’s Pre-Budget Report to outline clearly the ways in which the Government will help UK manufacturers as the economy moves from recession to recovery. "
The food sector is not only the UK’s largest manufacturing industry – accounting for 14% of output – it is one of the few that has weathered the worst of the recession, helping to underpin overall economic activity. But FDF believes more could be done to support food and drink manufacturers.
FDF recently published a ‘checklist’ outlining the 20 simple steps that Government could take to support food and drink producers and is urging Government to ensure the UK’s biggest manufacturing sector is at the heart of efforts to rebalance the economy. FDF is also one of the 11 leading trade associations to back the Manufacturing Alliance’s detailed submission to the Chancellor, which highlights other practical measures the Government can implement to provide a stable and supportive business environment for manufacturers.
Julian Hunt, FDF Director of Communications said, “Food and drink manufacturing is both a strategic and an economically vital component of the UK economy. We will be looking closely at what the Chancellor has to say next week and hope to see signs that he has listened to the needs of manufacturers, particularly those in our sector who play such a key role in the economic health of the nation.”
