Family recipes land Sim's Foods deal with Tesco

"A FAMILY-RUN Indian food business is continuing to expand having secured a new supply contract with supermarket giant Tesco."

Pontyclun-based Sim’s Foods was launched by Sokhy and Goldie Sandhu and their son Tee, 23, in 2009.

It has recently secured an order to supply three of its Samosaco-branded products to the 49 Tesco stores in Wales after passing the supermarket’s supplier approval audit.

The company has since achieved British Retail Consortium (BRC) accreditation.

Sim’s customers includes the food service sections at the Millennium Stadium, the Cardiff City Stadium and Swansea’s Liberty Stadium, as well as Cardiff and Swansea universities.

Retail stores stocking its Samosaco products include Harry Tuffins across Mid Wales and Shropshire and Eurostar in Dolgellau and Blaenau Ffestiniog

The company is keen to expand its Samosaco brand across Wales and the UK.

To accommodate its growth plans it is forecasting to employ up to 15 people by the end of this year and has earmarked a 1,200sq ft unit adjacent to its existing 2,000sq ft factory for expansion. Sokhy said: “Gaining BRC accreditation is a great step forward for the company and will hopefully open many new doors for us,

“BRC is recognised by all the major retailers and food service companies.”

The three Samosaco products stocked by Tesco are selection packs of vegetable samosas and pakoras, spinach and potato samosas and onion bhajees and hot Punjabi samosas.

Sim’s Foods sources all ingredients in Wales and uses only certified flours, oils and spices in its quality products. Further new products are in the pipeline.

The family began making samosas when they ran Toronto Asian Store 31 years ago.

Sokhy said: “We make everything ourselves using family recipes and with the help of just three part-timers at present.

“Having listened carefully to what customers want, we are really pleased with the way the business is going.

“Previously we were running five grocery stores in the Cardiff and made 1,000 samosas a week to supply them.

“We saw a gap in the market for this sort of product, sold our stores, set up the factory and we haven’t looked back since.”
