Dog food firm Butcher's abandon Coventry factory plan

"DOG food giant Butcher’s will not be relocating to Coventry’s £13 million flagship business park"
The pet food company has pulled out of plans to bring its manufacturing facilities and headquarters to Whitley Business Park - creating 200 jobs in the city.
The news has met with disappointment from business and council leaders who were hoping the deal would help the local economy and ease unemployment levels.
The Coventry Telegraph reported in October last year that the manufacturer was looking to move from its base in Crick, near Rugby, to the business park in a bid to boost production by 50 per cent.
Outline planning permission for the 260,000 sq ft plant, with warehouse space and offices, had already been granted and detailed plans were due to be considered last month.
The company believed the move could help them become the leading dog food manufacturer in the UK.
However, the firm has now decided to build a new facility at its existing processing factory in Crick.
Coun Kevin Foster, deputy leader of Coventry City Council, said: “I am disappointed to hear that Butcher’s will not be bringing its headquarters to Coventry, given that it would have created 200 jobs for the city.”
In an email given to the Coventry Telegraph, it states that the ‘familiarity of their existing location was too strong a draw against relocation to a new city’.
More than two years ago, Rugby Borough Council blocked plans for the company to relocate to the town amid fears of bad smells and the impact on house prices.
Alan Durham, director of international trade at the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “This project could have created new jobs in Coventry but at least the jobs are remaining within the area which is good news for Rugby.
“It is vital that all cities and towns in the region continue to work hard to make this an attractive place to do business both in terms of expansion of current companies as well as attracting inward investment.”
Nobody from Butcher’s was available for comment.
