Cox pipped out as our top apple as sweeter Gala takes over UK sales
by Daily Mail Reporter - 15/03/2011
"It has been the UK's favourite home-grown apple for a century - but now the Cox has lost its crown."
Industry figures show that British farmers have sold more of the sweeter Gala variety than Coxes for the first time.
During the latest season, 22,000 tons of Gala were sold to UK supermarkets, compared to 21,600 tons of Cox.
The previous year, it was 19,900 tons of Gala and 21,700 tons of Cox.
Adrian Barlow, chief executive of English Apples & Pears, said: 'Gala has a very simple taste, and it's sweet.'
But he said he expected Cox to remain a significant UK crop.
Gala was introduced to the UK from New Zealand in 1990 and has been the UK's best-selling variety - when counting both imports and home-grown produce - for almost a decade.
