Co-op launches £21m skills drive

Co-op launches £21m skills drive

"North West group Co-operative has launched an £21m campaign to boost skills levels in the region."

The group, which has interests in food, financial services, pharmacies, funerals and travel, has launched its own Apprenticeship Academy.

It will launch its own state-of-the-art school in Manchester which it says will deliver “deliver a world class business and finance specialism” in six weeks time.

Group chief executive Peter Marks said: “Shackled with the legacy of national debt, an increasingly inaccessible property ladder and an uncertain future shaped by climate change, it’s a challenging time to be a young person in Britain.

“All too often, we see or hear stories which portray youngsters as poorly educated, work-shy and uncaring.

“But, someone who runs a business which employs over 120,000 people, a quarter of whom are under the age of 25, I know this just isn’t true – we must start talking up the young and see them as the solution rather than the problem.”

The Co-op has promised to create 2,000 new apprenticeships at a cost of £9m, invest £1m in the expansion of its Trust Schools bringing the number up to 200, put £1.5m into its green schools environmental initiative and invest £1m into its sports and arts programmes.

It added that its Apprenticeship Academy will offer work experience programmes with at least one other business, the prospect of joining a management training scheme and recognised national qualifications, such as NVQs or Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
