Calorie labels on fast food ... They’re loving it!
by - 26/09/2011
"Health chiefs have welcomed moves by fast food chain McDonald’s to introduce calorie information to all of its menus — but want food companies to go further."
All 1,200 of its UK restaurants will start displaying the information from tomorrow as part of a national deal between food companies and the Department of Health to give people more information about the food they eat.
Companies including KFC, Pizza Hut, Pret a Manger and JD Wetherspoon have also signed up to the Responsibility Deal.
And Greggs, Starbucks and Burger King have agreed to introduce calorie labelling in their outlets from next year.
A Department for Health spokesman said: “The Responsibility Deal is a new approach to tackling public health concerns. Instead of tying the food and drinks industry up in red tape, the Government is working in partnership with them to deliver faster and better results.
“Research shows that calorie labelling makes people more aware of the energy content of their foods and does influence people’s choices. This will have a huge effect on the high street and will help people to make healthier choices when they are eating out.”A spokesman for NHS Bolton said: “It’s vital that people are given the right information about the food they buy and eat. This helps people to make better choices and manage a balanced diet more effectively.
“We’d like to see more food outlets provide this information along with other details, such as salt, sugar and saturated fat content.”
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: “One in six meals are now eaten outside the home and for those meals we often have no idea how many calories we are eating.
“That is why this is such a great achievement by the Responsibility Deal. It will help people spot those hidden calories in their favourite foods and keep an eye on their waistlines.”
Jill McDonald, CEO and president of McDonald’s UK, said: “This move, as part of the Public Health Responsibility Deal, supports the principles we believe are important—giving our customers clear information to help them make decisions that are right for them and provide a choice on our menu.”
