Booths enters Slow Food partnership to boost local products (UK)

Booths enters Slow Food partnership to boost local products (UK)

"Local retailer Booths has partnered with Slow Food UK to promote the quality, provenance, seasonality and regionality of food"

Booths has 26 stores based in Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria and Yorkshire and a turnover of £250 million. It also has a tradition of retailing local and regional foods.

Slow Food UK, which is part of global organisation of more than 100,000 members in 150 countries, aims to promote the greater enjoyment of food through a better understanding of its taste, quality and production.

It said it has “a synergy with Booths and admires the company’s commitment to sourcing products from the counties it serves”.

Slow Food added that the partnership will enable it to build on its core infrastructure, serve its network of local groups more efficiently and support its education projects.

At least 25% of all products in Booths’ stores at any one time are locally sourced, with 85% of its meat and 65% of its bread from the region and in season and 100% of its tomatoes are British.

Edwin Booth, chairman and the fifth generation of the Booth family to run the retailer, said: “The first time that I heard about Slow Food I was struck by its passion for good food and drink which is produced with care and tastes good. It is products like this that form the bedrock of our range at Booths.”

The partnership will see a number of initiatives put in place, including Taste Adventure, an interactive workshop to communicate the excitement of food to families. There will also be membership of Slow Food for Booths’ staff and customers and recipe cards throughout the stores highlighting ‘good, clean and fair’ food.

In February consumer research from IGD showed that - when asked about the types of food they purchased over the last month - 30% of shoppers said they had purchased locally produced food, up from 15% in 2006.

The main reasons shoppers gave for supporting local food was that it had not travelled as far and was therefore fresher and it was a way of supporting the local economy.

Commenting on the survey, IGD said that consumer expect the grocery industry to support their moral and ethical values.
