A food production site in Forres that closed two years ago with the loss of 18 jobs is set for a new lease of life following a Scottish Government grant.

The ANM Group's Highland Country Food processing site in Forres is the subject of a purchase bid by the Northampton-based Jerky Group.

They have won grant of almost £250,000 from the Scottish Government to develop the site which, if the takeover bid is successful, will produce a "premium line" of meat products.

Behind the plans is the Jerky Group director and founder Thomas Morrison, who is originally from Aberdeen. Mr Morrison's firm have been producing jerky in the UK and Europe for the last two years, commanding over 90% of the market share for the product.

However, he has major plans to branch out into other production areas if his bid to take over the Forres premises are successful.

He said: "The new facility at Forres will be used for new product development and our intention is to produce a premium line of new meat products there. unlike anything on the market at the moment.

"One bit plus about the Forres facility is that we're going to be sourcing meat from the north-east of Scotland, and as a Scot from Aberdeen I'm really pleased about that."

The Jerky Group's products are carried by Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's and BP service stations.

Their decision to open in Forres came on the back of support from the government and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, with the company previously considering expansion in Glasgow before learning of the Moray site.

ANM have confirmed that they are in discussions with the Jerky Group over the sale of the site.
