Black apricots, yellow carrots and bubblegum plums: The unusual new fruit and veg coming to a store near you…

"Try this, exclaims food technologist Hugh Mowatt, thrusting what looks like a slice of ripe plum in my direction.
"
It’s got familiar smooth purple skin and juicy orange flesh - but when I lift the piece of fruit towards my lips to eat, I get a distinct whiff of… sherbet?
‘Yes,’ cries Hugh, ‘I call it the bubblegum plum.’
And sure enough, it’s got the unmistakably sweet taste of bubblegum.
But the bubblegum plum - also known by it’s official name, Flavour King - isn’t the only unusual fruit to be found in the supermarket.
Other unlikely taste sensations are the Crème de Lite carrot (pale cream in colour), Baby Lemons (truly dinky, just slice one in half and plop into your G&T) and Black Velvet Apricots (apricots, only black, of course).
All of the fruit and vegetables have been specially bred for their superior taste by the food wizards at Marks & Spencer.
During the space of a dizzying hour, I am served what looks like a purple stripy potato (Mayan Twilight, affectionately dubbed the Nemo after the clownfish star of the children’s film), Tiny Tangerines (which look like marbles and taste like the juiciest orange you’ve ever eaten, only sweeter) and the new kid on the block, the Flower Sprout (an amalgam of curly kale and Brussels sprout).
You might imagine that such culinary wonders are created in the sterile confines of a high-tech laboratory or plastic-covered wilderness. But the Flower Sprout is grown on a genuine, old-fashioned working farm - complete with a farmer with muddy boots
and ruddy complexion and vegetables growing in soil, outdoors!
William Haines, the fifth generation of Haines to farm this land, strides out across the field with me and proudly shows off his crop.
