Bettys chief executive Andrew Baker steps down
by Julie Hayes - 19/09/2011
"THE new chief executive of North Yorkshire tearooms chain Bettys and Taylors has left the company."
Andrew Baker became the first non-family member to be appointed as chief executive of the firm after long-serving boss Jonathan Wild retired in April.
Bettys issued a statement saying the longer-term ambitions and cultural direction for the group called for a different approach than Mr Baker offered, but did not give further details on the difference in direction.
The statement said: “It is with regret that we announce Andrew Baker has left Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate.
“Andrew brought many admirable qualities and enormous experience to the role, but he and the board both agreed that the longer-term ambitions and cultural direction for the group called for a different approach.
“We wish Andrew every success for the future.”
Mr Baker was formerly chief executive officer at Prince Charles’s organic food company Duchy Originals and has held directorships at Cadbury Schweppes and Tate&Lyle.
The company said it would make a further announcement about a replacement for Mr Baker.
Previous chief executive Mr Wild joined the company in 1975 when Bettys and Taylors employed 350 staff and had an annual turnover of £1.6 million.
He grew the business to employ 1,246 staff and achieve £102.8 million turnover in the year ended October 31, 2010, when it also announced pre-tax profit had increased from £7.7 million in 2009 to £9.4 million in 2010. The business shared out £2.3 million of that profit among staff through quarterly bonuses.
The business runs Bettys tearooms in Northallerton and Ilkley, two in Harrogate and two in York.
Taylors of Harrogate now produces the third largest tea brand in the UK, the best-selling roast and ground coffee brand in the UK and exports to more than 30 countries worldwide.
