500 jobs created at Brakes Group's new Reading warehouse

500 jobs created at Brakes Group's new Reading warehouse

"Five hundred new jobs are to be created in Reading with the opening of a huge new storage and distribution centre."

Food supplier Brakes Group has confirmed it will be moving into a new 207,000sq ft warehouse in Suttons Business Park, in East Reading.

The news follows the prospect of a possible 1,000 new Tesco warehouse jobs in South Reading and 400 Ikea posts in Calcot.

The chilled warehouse will be built on the site made available by the demolition of the old Suttons Seeds building, more recently the home of Jacobs engineering.

Harriet Rodgers, spokeswoman for Brakes, said: “The new building will be a state-of-the-art storage and multi-temperature delivery hub.

“Approximately 500 people will be employed at the new depot, with the majority of the team working in the warehouse or delivering to customers.”

Councillor Tony Page, deputy leader of Reading Borough Council, welcomed the news, which came just days after figures showed an increase in the number of people claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance in the borough.

He said: “All new jobs are to be welcomed and I hope it will result in a good spread of jobs, including skilled and managerial posts, as well as basic manual jobs.

“I hope they will also be looking to offer training packages with a view to attracting people for careers in a way that Tesco does.”

Brakes Group is one of the UK’s biggest catering suppliers to the food service industry, including restaurants, pubs and hotels as well as schools and hospitals.

Sutton Business Park manager Standard Life Investments will build the warehouse which Brakes has agreed to lease for 25 years.
